Laura has a Masters in Teaching Art PreK-8 from Salem State University and has loved teaching art to children and adults since 2005.

In addition to his fine arts prints, David has an extensive portfolio of industrial products and jewelry/craft photography. He is an active member of the Arts Collaborative of Wakefield and he has a studio at Porter Mill Studios in Beverly.

3-11-20 Update: In case of Creative Arts temporarily suspending or cancelling classes or lessons based on guidelines from the Town of Reading Public Heath Department, we will communicate with each family to move forward. See Creative Arts Health Practice Guidelines.

 

Programs are for students ages 5 - 13. Teen art programs are for students 13+.

Extended Day is available from 8am to 5:30pm; details below. 

Programs run Monday to Friday, with a choice of mornings, afternoons or full days.

Partial weeks are not available for registration.

Registration: Through our online system and we accept phone or in-person registrations during business hours. Click on any "REGISTER NOW" button to enroll.

Accessibility: We welcome students of all abilities and learning styles. Our facility is accessible via ramps at the Lowell, Sanborn and Woburn Street entrances.

  • Pre-register now -- at no cost --  to hold a spot for your child.

MORNINGS

Color Explosion 1

Explore the brilliant world of color with a fresh variety of 2D and 3D projects: tie-dye t-shirts, drip paintings, watercolors, color mixing + blending, and lots more! Each session covers tie dye; most other projects aren’t repeated.

 

AFTERNOONS

Mixed Media Painting

Using a variety of painting materials, we will mix and match media throughout the week. Students will learn about the work of the masters and create their own mixed media abstracts, landscapes and subjects like people and animals.

    2    JUNE 29 - JULY 3   

 

MORNINGS

Marvelous Manga

Students will learn fundamentals of creating Japanese anime characters of their own vision and design (facial features, figure drawing, proportion) and work on developing storylines for making manga (Japanese-style comic).

AFTERNOONS

Pottery Studio

Air-dry clay tools and methods such as pinch, slab + coil will be explored throughout the week. Students will create a variety of pieces and bring them to life with paint, glitter, feathers and other findings they choose.

    3    JULY 6 - 10   

MORNINGS

Beach House Dreams

Starting with craft sticks + wood worker scraps, students will create the beach house of their dreams! Students are free to craft interiors, exteriors, habitats + more with our collection of art supplies on hand. 

AFTERNOONS

Clay Monstahs!

Using clay, form a creature from your imagination, + bring it to life with paint and found objects. Students will also build a habitat with findings from nature. Watch out! It might jump off the table when you’re not looking!

MORNINGS 9AM - 12PM

Graphic Novels, Ages 7 - 13

Combining storytelling, character drawing and scene illustration, students will create their own worlds and the illustrations to go with them. Students will end the week having created a graphic novel (or comic book) that uses a simple book binding technique. Our teacher, AJ Jerrett, taught the popular comics class at Reading Library last summer.

AFTERNOONS 1PM - 4PM

Photography for Teens, Ages 13+

The class addresses aesthetic photography principles as they relate to composition, space, exposure, light and color. Students complete daily assignments and bring in prints the next day for constructive criticism. All types of cameras are welcomed, including phones. Instructor: David Kay

    4    JULY 13 - 17   

MORNINGS

Printmaking

Brightly colored inks + paints plus layered color + textures will inspire students to print their own original images on a diversity of surfaces (paper, cloth, etc.). Relief printing and other printing techniques are planned.

Portfolio Intensive for Teens, Ages 13+

Experienced art students focus on the elements + principles of design through observational drawing and a variety of materials + mediums. Portfolio preparation and presentation are explored throughout the course.

    5    JULY 20 - 24   

MORNINGS

Mini Masterpieces

Students learn about the work of the masters and use different art materials throughout the week to recreate their original version. Open interpretation, variation, color themes and expression are welcome in our class of exploration.

AFTERNOONS

African Art

In conjunction with "The Lion King Jr" being produced by CA's Theater program, students will explore the rich and colorful heritage of the African continent​. Painting, mask construction, fabric printing and beading will be covered plus an opportunity to create set decor.

    6    JULY 27 - 31   

MORNINGS

Sculpture

Students will combine engineering skills (stability, symmetry, balance, measuring) + sculpture techniques to create artful structures. Many materials will be available to utilize: wire, fabric, nuts/bolts, wood scraps + more.

AFTERNOONS

Street Art

This bold yet personal art form surrounds us in urban areas and in our town, bringing energy to our environment through its graphic and bright colors. Get ready to weave, paint, sketch, spray + print in the classroom + outdoors.

Recycled Wild Creatures

A jungle jam of upcycled materials, use paint and loose parts to capture the myriad of forms + habitats of creatures - real or imagined. We ask students to bring small, lightweight items to upcycle: boxes, lids, styrofoam, etc.

MORNINGS, 9AM - 12PM

Drawing and Painting for Teens, Ages 13+

Students learned how to create perspective, shade subjects and compose drawings plus how to mix paint for the right color. Watercolor and acrylic painting techniques were also covered as they moved through the session's projects.

    8    AUGUST 10 - 14   

MORNINGS

Nature Based Art

Students will pair a variety of art materials with findings taken from outdoors. Nature’s patterns, colors, textures and light will inspire painting, collage, printing, arrangements and personal creative expression!

AFTERNOONS

I'm So Wired!

Looking for a unique art form? Lots of sculptures made of wire and findings will be created after students learn techniques, materials and ways to twist, loop, crimp and wrap a plentiful collection of plain and colored wires.

    9    AUGUST 17 - 21   

MORNINGS

Mixed Media Madness

The perfect class to experiment with lots of art supplies and surfaces! A new project will be created each day as we make our way through a mixed bag of painting, sculpture, printmaking, upcycling, drawing and more.

AFTERNOONS

Creature Feature

    10    AUGUST 24 - 28   

MORNINGS

Art Without Borders

Be inspired by various world cultures and the impact of their environment on their visual arts culture. Haitian metal work, Puerto Rico masks, drawing, painting and sculpting are included in this popular week.

AFTERNOONS

Contemporary Creations

Inspired by the multi-media work of contemporary artists, students will explore new work through examples and projects using a variety of media. Older students will discuss the artist’s intention and execution of concept.
